According to the Euro monitor International, Bangladesh is identified as one of the 20 prospective markets offering most opportunities for consumer goods companies globally where 38% contribution is made by the public sector. Transcom Beverage Limited, Partex Beverage Ltd, Akij Food & Beverage Ltd, Agricultural Marketing Company Ltd (AMCL), Globe Soft Drinks Ltd are dominating the beverage industry following an oligopolistic market structure. Transcom is leading the industry by growing more than 18 times since its inception in 2000.
The industry has been more than doubled during the last decade keeping an average growth rate of exceeding 7-8 percent per annum for the last five years. Increasing urbanization, growing number of young people, rising temperatures, and product innovation are the major factors that are driving the sales of energy drinks across the country. Another factor that offers immense opportunities for the sector to grow is that consumption of hard drinks in Bangladesh is highly regulated whereas it is widely consumed in developed countries.
The major producers of soft drinks in Bangladesh are Pepsi, 7UP, Mirinda, Slice, Mountain dew, RC Cola, Virgin, Uro Cola, Coca Cola, Sprite, and Pran Cola. Akij Group (Speed, Wild Brew, Firm Fresh, SPA, Mojo, Clemon, Lemu, Fruitika), Agriculture Marketing Company Limited (Pran), Partex Beverage Limited (RC Cola, RC Lemon and Lychena) and Globe Soft Drinks Limited (Uro Cola, Uro Lemon) are the other beverage producers. If these companies can hold their market share accordingly to their plan, the drink industry can be flourished into a major source of foreign remittance as there is an everlasting demand for soft drinks among the young generation which is the most prominent consumer group in the market.
